Gary Bishop

Images: Past/Presence

This is our first show of the work of Gary Bishop, a long-time major influence on the Dallas photography scene. This exhibit concentrates on his highly regarded documentary imagery, even though for years he has also been engaged in more exploratory efforts in the photography medium.

After several years in pursuit of becoming a professional race car driver, he began to work in photography with a similar passionate intensity. Mr. Bishop became a professional in 1969, specializing in photojournalism, editorial and commercial photography. He also was with the innovative Newsroom on the local PBS TV station. His work has been published in many major magazines both here and abroad. In addition, he taught on the college level for years. In the mid-1970s, he co-founded the non-profit and influential Allen Street Gallery. He was born (1944) and raised in Dallas.

Mr. Bishop continues to shoot documentary work, carrying his camera almost everywhere. He is known for the engaging quality of his approach to his subjects, and he will also tell you, “Curiosity. That’s why I make photographs.”
