Archie Campbell Greeting a Fan, Grand Ole Opry, Nashville, Tennessee, 1972

It's important for a country entertainer to stay close to his or her fans—and not "get above their raising." Here, Archie Campbell takes time out during his performance to greet an admirer. Campbell had a long career as a singer and entertainer, but he was best known as a comedian, working on the Grand Ole Opry and starring in (and writing for) television's Hee Haw. At a time when most country comedians dressed in goofy hillbilly garb, Campbell broke new ground by dressing in more normal clothes, often even business suits.
