Robb Kendrick, Mexican Mummy #1

Robb Kendrick

Mexican Mummy #1

These photographs are of the well known mummies of Guanajuato, Mexico. These people were victims of a cholera outbreak in 1833. They were buried as soon as possible thinking that would keep the infection from spreading. Due to the dry climate and soil conditions, the bodies dried out before decomposition. The bodies were dug up when relatives could not pay the local grave tax. They have been on display for years. Eventually the law was changed in 1958.
