Printing-Out Paper

Printing-out paper does not need developing chemicals. A negative is contact printed onto it, and the light source is sunlight. Thus Linda Connor can make prints out in her garden. Every so often, the print is checked to see how it's coming; Ms. Connor compares the procedure with checking something in an oven while baking.

Exposure times vary from a few minutes to several hours. The paper has a greater tonal range than enlarger papers and is self-masking. During development, dark areas stop getting darker, allowing detail to be seen therein, and the light areas continue to build. Normal paper has a range of around 10 zones while printing-out paper's range is 14 to 16 zones.
