Henry Horenstein, Porter Wagoner

Porter Wagoner, Symphony Hall, Boston, Massachusetts, 1972

Porter Wagoner has long been the quintessential country entertainer, combining sharp outfits with old-time country humor and a lively band. Perhaps best known for his association with Dolly Parton—she was a member of his band and a duet-recording partner from 1967–1974—Porter was a huge country star long before Dolly came along. His first big hit was in 1954 ("Company's Coming") and his songs continued charting well into the 1980s. The Porter Wagoner Show, an early syndicated television show (1960-1980), had as many as 150 subscriber stations at its peak.
